Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects how your body regulates blood sugar (glucose), a vital source of energy for your muscles and organs. There are two main types:
- Type 1 diabetes, which occurs when the body produces little or no insulin, typically diagnosed in childhood or adolescence
- Type 2 diabetes, more common in adults, develops when the body becomes resistant to insulin or doesn’t produce enough of it
Managing diabetes effectively is essential to avoid complications like heart disease, nerve damage, kidney problems and vision loss. A proactive approach, including regular health checks, a balanced diet, physical activity, and medication can significantly improve quality of life for those with diabetes.
At queens Road Medical Practice, we aim to provide comprehensive care, empowering you to understand and manage your condition. Our team is here to help you through offering guidance, support and regular health assessments tailored to your needs.
Diabetic checks
As part of the States of Guernsey’s [link] initiative to enhance diabetes care across the Bailiwick, we are proud to offer free annual diabetic checks. This service, launched in spring 2022, is designed to help diabetic patients maintain optimal health through regular monitoring and early intervention.
The annual diabetic check is a 30-minute appointment with one of our specially-trained Practice Nurses. During the session, we’ll assess various health markers and provide tailored advice to help you manage your diabetes effectively.
To ensure every patient benefits, we send out invitations via the post and text to all patients diagnosed with diabetes. However, if you haven’t received your invitation or feel overdue for your check, contact us directly.
