Plastic-free periods
Plastic-free periods
The average person who menstruates will use more than 11,000 pads and tampons during their lifetime.
Traditional tampons and disposable pads contain plastic and can take over 500 years to break down. Switching to one of the many plastic-free period products now available is better for the environment, your health, and your finances.
Better for you
Reusable period products, such as menstrual cups or discs, reusable pads, and period underwear, are often made from medical-grade silicone or natural fibres, which are kinder to skin.
If you don’t feel ready to switch to reusable products just yet, simply choosing plastic-free disposable tampons or pads can still benefit your skin.
Unlike some standard disposables, plastic-free products don’t contain added fragrances, chlorine bleach, or other synthetic materials that can sometimes irritate sensitive skin. Some people who switch to plastic-free alternatives also find they experience less dryness and discomfort during their period.
Better for the planet
A single menstrual cup, or one set of reusable pads or period underwear, can replace hundreds, and over time, even thousands, of disposable products, helping to keep plastic out of landfills and our oceans. Every small change adds up.
Better for your budget
Although reusable products can cost a little more upfront, they are designed to last and can save you money over time.
A menstrual cup or a set of reusable pads typically costs around the same as a few months' worth of disposables, but many last five to ten years.
Over time, these products could lead to significant savings.
What plastic-free period products are available?
There are plastic-free period products to suit different flows, routines, and comfort preferences:
- Reusable period pads: Best for anyone who prefers an external product that feels familiar and is easy to use.
- Period underwear: A convenient option for everyday wear, overnight use, lighter days, or as extra protection alongside another product. Period swimwear is also available for swimming.
- Menstrual cups: Well suited to those who are comfortable using an internal product and want long-lasting protection with fewer changes throughout the day.
- Menstrual discs: Another internal option that may suit active lifestyles and people who find the shape or position of a cup uncomfortable.
- Organic or plastic-free pads and tampons: A simple first step for anyone who prefers disposable products or is not ready to switch to reusables.
